After leaving the corporate design environment and exploring several options I decided to found paul bas design; to start as a one-person, but well networked, design services provider. Sharing a studio – situated in Eindhoven, at the crossroads of technology and design – with my partner Ulrike Jurklies, it is logical we cooperate on projects with our complementing capabilities.
With over 30 years of practice in the product design and UX profession, I worked at design studios in the Netherlands, Belgium, Singapore and Hong Kong, across different industry sectors and product categories. I bring a very broad, up to date and culturally relevant experience to any project and am a keen promotor of sustainability and circular economy.
Together with several teams well over 40 design awards were gathered and I personally contributed to patents for a variety of products. Apart from working for Philips I cooperated on projects for/with Bose, Swarovski, Unilever, Proctor & Gamble, Ikea and others.
Design services are packaged according to your needs – whether you wish to develop a tangible product from scratch or you only want to exchange thoughts on a new digital experience. When needed for a project, particular capabilities will be outsourced and managed.

The design of products – the phased process from concept sketch to UHD foto-realistic rendering, from a principle on a napkin to full 3D-file. This for an isolated, unique product, for (part of) a family or category or a whole portfolio; all the way to production.
innovation support
All design-related aspects and activities of a typical go-to-market process from the initial idea or technological principle to a product on the shelves – support and guidance for all the possible phases and the narratives along the way.
process development
The simplified ‘design thinking’ or full-on co-creation approach towards any kind of innovation – facilitation of the process can be provided if needed but close, in-house cooperation is inevitable for any desired outcome to be relevant.

Innr – Outdoor Smart Spot XL Colour
After the succes of the OEM spot the company decided to develop their own product from scratch. A new design, high light output and state of the art connectivity. After several iterations – we even helped visualize the light output by accurately rendering the performance of the new reflector – and improvement phases the product is now available on their own site and on major online shopping platforms. The product produces white and coloured light at 680 lumen (per unit) and is controlled through Zigbee.
UV Smart – D25+
An automatic device using UV-C light for fast – in only 25 seconds – and highly effective disinfection of invasive and non-invasive medical devices, electronics and other small equipment in hospitals, health centres, nursing homes and laboratories. We cooperated with the inhouse design team to create the basic form concept and work out technical details.
OEM – Monitor tunable LED light
An elegant and simple to use luminaire conceived to be placed on the top edge of your monitor or laptop screen – providing pleasant and practicable light on your keyboard and table surface.
Deloitte – Maastoren
At the request of Arttenders a proposal was visualized for the transformation of 8 flights of emergency staircases; connecting all the floors occupied by Deloitte. The challenge was to create such an attractive alternative the employees would opt for taking the stairs more often.
Philips – BlueControl Advance
Discover portable light therapy with blue LED light for treating mild to moderate psoriasis. Philips BlueControl Advance is a compact, rechargable device; gentle and does not use UV light. The device has clinically proven effectiveness to the extent you can get your money back if you are not satisfied after 90 days.
Innr – Visuals
To facilitate and allow for much earlier – on occasion before even a first model is made – communication internally and on online platforms, high quality visuals are provided. Composition renderings are fully compliant for major site like Amazon and others.
3D printed luminaire
Using existing LED lightsources, the request was for (very) large, unique and visually appealing, suspended illuminated objects to hang above the meeting room tables. By applying simplified parametric principles each luminaire is unique and provides a sparkling light effect when one moves through the room without compromising the glare free light needed on the table surface.
Philips Steam Irons
During my time at Philips Domestic Appliances I worked on many different (steam) irons; a very common household device which is surprizingly complex (and conflicting) in technical aspects – hand held, mainly consisting of different plastics, filled with water (by consumers), creating steam internally and connected to a live 220V poweroutlet, with a heating element drawing well over 2000W… enough to melt the aluminium steam chamber should the thermosthat fail.
Coloured light projector
An alternative product design for a small coloured light projector was proposed; using existing/available electronics and interface while keeping the design simple and geometric and the number of parts as low as possible.
